1. Deputies/Officers shall not approach the canine and/or canine vehicle without the <br />knowledge and consent of the canine handler. <br />2. Deputies/Officers should not enter an area or building that the canine is searching <br />unless advised to by the canine handler. <br />3. In the event the handler becomes involved in a physical altercation or is attacked, <br />officers should move away from the handler and/or the subject. As the canine exits <br />the patrol vehicle, he is trained to come to the handler's aid. The canine is not trained <br />to recognize uniforms or refrain from attacking persons in uniform. <br />B. Searches <br />1. The canine may be trained to alert to the presence of narcotics including but not limited <br />to cannabis, cocaine (including crack), and heroin. However, the canine should not be <br />used to search persons for possession of narcotics unless the canine is trained for <br />passive alert. <br />2. The first deputy/officer at the scene should not touch, approach, retrieve, or handle <br />any evidence, articles, or debris believed to be associated to or with the scene. <br />3. Deputies/Officers should be directed to secure the scene and establish and maintain a <br />perimeter. They shall maintain said perimeter until advised to discontinue the <br />perimeter by the canine handler or supervisor. <br />4. If a building is to be searched, all perimeter deputy/officers must stand away from, and <br />out of view of windows, doors, and other openings. <br />5. One deputy/officer should remain at the point of entry to assist in the event suspects <br />are located and/or trouble ensues. <br />C. Tracking <br />1. When tracking an armed suspect, one officer should follow approximately fifty (50) feet <br />behind the handler (or at a distance the handler deems necessary) to provide <br />protection and cover. <br />2. Whenever a Canine Team is called to initiate a track, deputy/officers on the scene <br />must use care not to contaminate the crime (track) scene. Deputies/Officers must not <br />allow victims or witnesses to contaminate the crime (track) scene. <br />SECTION V. TRAINING AND PERFORMANCE STANDARDS <br />A.
