Reorganization of the Public Works Department — Lift Station Division
Introduction: Consideration of approval of the reorganization of the Lift Station Division in the Public
Works Department by authorizing the temporary addition of a second Lead Lift Station Technician is
requested.
Discussion: The Lift Station Division currently has five full-time employees: one Lift Station
Superintendent, one Lead Lift Station Technician, and three Lift Station Technician/Service Workers. One
of the Lift Station Technician/Service Worker positions has been vacant for over a year, as a qualified
candidate has not been found to fill the vacancy. Three out of the current four Lift Station Division staff
will be retiring within the next two years. To ensure future stability and a smooth transition within the
Division a succession strategy has been planned by City Management. It is requested that an additional
Lead Lift Station Technician position be added temporarily. This will allow the City to hire a qualified
outside candidate who can begin to be trained on the City's lift stations. The existing Lead Lift Station
Technician and Lift Station Superintendent will train this person and share their historical knowledge of
the City's wastewater collection system. When the Lift Station Superintendent retires and the position is
filled, the temporary additional lead Lift Station Technician position will be eliminated.
Budget Impact: Sufficient funds are available in various personnel accounts in the Water and Sewer Fund
Lift Station Division (0752).
Recommendation: The City Manager and the Public Works Director recommended approval of the
reorganization of the Public Works Department — Lift Station Division.
Audience Participation: No one came forward to address the Consent Agenda.
MOTION: Vice Mayor Aramendia moved to approve the Consent Agenda, as presented.
Motion was seconded by Commissioner Busch. Motion carried unanimously by
voice vote 5-0.
