three years of experience and certifications in Natural Areas and Aquatics
through the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.
We have interviewed some and have not found a suitable candidate. We
are considering hiring a candidate with some of the certification required
and possibly allowing them to get the additional certification during their
first 6 months of employment. The current technician is working very
well. We are still working with Applied Aquatics and in an effort to
transition their responsibilities to the City once the new technician is
hired. They are currently spraying the lakes until we are ready to utilize
our new air boat.
A follow-up from Lake Kathryn hydrilla treatment is the second half of the
lagoon has been treated. This is the largest water body we manage with a
hydrilla issue. We are expecting to complete this treatment soon. We will
be completing a perimeter treatment around Lost Lake. There is some
hydrilla under the bridge at Middle and South Triplet. There was a
treatment on Lake Concord about a month ago and there is hardly a
"sprig" of hydrilla in sight. There is an on-going treatment on Grassy Lake
using fluridone, the long term systemic herbicide; the last one that was
done about a month ago. There are some "mats" of dead vegetation now
because it takes longer for the plants to breakdown. We are now
maintaining all of the City's wet retention ponds. North Triplet Shoreline
wetland restoration work continues to be done. A class from Rollins
worked on this project and did an excellent job. They will continue to
work with us in the future.
A very successful Air Potato raid was completed this winter, about (60)
people were helping to remove Caesar weed. We had a complete roll -off
full within one hour. We will work to remove this target plant more in the
future.
Ms. Williams showed a picture of grass carp encountered under the
boardwalk on Lake Concord. She is still working with FWC to get the
Triplet Chain and Lake Kathryn permitted. Starting the process of getting
the fish screen installed. We have to notify all of the residents that live on
the water bodies that additional carp are to be stocked, to make sure that
no one objects. They will all get a letter to notify them of what we are
going to do and to let them know if they object, they should contact us.
After we have completed this process and hopefully, not get any
objections back, we will be able to move forward to stocking the lakes
with the carp on the Chain and Lake Kathryn which will reduce our
herbicide usage. We already have some regrowth in that area and when
we get the carp they will do a better job of consuming it, before it
becomes noticeable.
2
