CASSELBERRP C1TP COMMISSION
Minutes of April 25, 2016 — Regular Meeting
Page7 of 12
B. Municipal Advisory Committee (Metroplan) Report
No report.
C. Leadership Seminole Board Report
Mayor Glancy reported that Leadership Seminole had held its Simulated Society (SIMSOC) class on Friday,
April 1, 2016 and she requested that Commissioner Aramendia share his opinion on how the class had gone.
Commissioner Aramendia stated that he had enjoyed the class and that it was very realistic in depicting how
today's society works. Mayor Glancy added that students were not allowed to discuss the details of this
particular class, which seemed very cryptic; however, it was an incredible learning experience and very
thought - provoking. She added that the next class would be Law and Justice, and after that would be
graduation for the City's participants, Commissioner Aramendia and Lynn Hoppes of the Recreation
Division. She added that next year's class was already filled and a waiting list had been started. She also
reported that the report from the Homelessness Task Force would be presented to the Seminole County Board
of County Commissioners on May 10, 2016 by Mr. John Hillemneyer of Rethinkhomelessness.org and Mr.
Phillip Mangano, former Executive Director of the United States Interagency Council on Homelessness. She
encouraged those interested to attend if at all possible.
D. Mayors /Managers Group Report
Mayor Glancy reported that discussion had centered around the Seminole County Sheriff s initiative to place
a school resource officer (SRO) in every school in Seminole County and they were still waiting for responses
from all the cities as to which ones were willing to have the Sheriff s Office provide the officers and which
cities preferred to fund their own officers at the schools. She added that the Seminole County Board of
County Commissioners would be considering budgeting for this initiative at its meeting to be held Tuesday,
April 26, 2016 at 9:30 a.m. Mr. Newlon clarified that currently the elementary schools are covered by part -
time deputy sheriffs, but the Sheriff s initiative proposes to place full time officers in the elementary schools.
He added that some of the cities have indicated they would prefer to place their own officers, and some prefer
to allow the Sheriff s Office to place them, and these staffing issues were still being worked out. Mayor
Glancy noted that Sheriff Eslinger had previously pointed out that almost every elementary school that is
located within the corporate limits of one of the cities within Seminole County has at least some students from
the unincorporated areas. She stated that the Sheriff's Office felt compelled to protect those children, as well
as all the children throughout the county and they desired to be partnered with the cities in this effort.
E.
