Educational Outreach: Lakes District Clean-up: Ms. Williams shared
photos. This was one of the largest groups of volunteers participating. It
was supported by the Lakes District and the Community Development
department. She supported the group by giving guidelines for the
drainage basins to be cleaned. The areas included were in Queens Mirror
and Triplet Chain drainage basins throughout the streets in the Lakes
District. The volunteers picked up garbage that filled one truck full of
debris. This event was very successful. She has been working with
Community Development to plan a clean-up for the Garden District. This
includes the "flower" streets.
We have a new Lakes Management Guide which has been mailed to the
lakes residents. It was updated with the fertilizer ordinance, current
contact list of which biologists are to be contacted for specific needs, and
permits required in the City.
A question was asked regarding the invasive apple snails update. Ms.
Williams shared that she has a Rollins College student that would like to
do this for a research project. She has been in contact with the student's
professor and is waiting on a confirmation. She was not able to locate any
snails when she last visited Lake Triplet. They should not be laying eggs
this time of the year, but if any one sees any bright, pink eggs on plant
materials, sea walls, dock posts, or anywhere that they can get a few
inches above the water to lay their eggs, please take notice. Do not pick
them up with your hands and do not crush them. They need to be
removed and placed in the trash. They can also be destroyed by painting
them with oil. If the student does not participate, a formal approach will
be made with the residents.
Summerloch Green (formerly Lake Kathryn Estates) Yacht Club Meeting -
February 7, 2019 — Will give educational information and work with their
HOA regarding the water body. There will be a meeting at
Dew Drop Park — Hosting an Input Workshop, Saturday, February 9 at noon.
We will be on site with a "Green -up" Booth to educate and share information.
Our Consultant has presented a plan for a Boardwalk along the north shore of
the lake, a fountain as a water feature and re -organizing other areas. They
are in the basic design stages. Food will be served.
The Weed Wrangle was previously called "Air Potato Raid". Since many
municipalities have successfully cleaned up the air potatoes, we need to
change the focus. Seminole County is modifying this program to incorporate
other invasive species. We will utilize the same area we have in the past, to
now focus on a plant called, Caesar weed. This is the plant that usually sticks
to your pants and they have little seeds that have to be pulled off any type of
5
