Florida winter months. It does not have a lot of natural enemies; triploid
grass carp are stocked in many of our lakes as a tool to help to control the
growth. They are not capable of reproducing therefore, when they are
placed in the lake, we will always know the maximum quantity. They also
eat any other type of plants when their target species are eliminated, so
the City and FWC are very careful not to overstock. Determinant upon
FWC approval, we will be removing a few of our fish screens and re-
installing. The entire Triplet Chain, including Secret Lake, Lost Lake and
Queens Mirror are all connected and drains into Lake Kathryn. There was
a fish barrier that was permitted through FWC by the Friends of Lake
Kathryn and it was not installed properly. It had large gaps in it that were
allowing the fish to get through it. The barrier was removed and the State
required us to get one that is according to their standards. Ms. Williams is
getting estimates. The City already has carp barriers near Seminola. We
are trying to look at ways to remove the barriers and just have a main one
at the Lake Kathryn weir. The State may agree with this, however, we
would have to send a letter stating that if ever, all of the fish will go to
Lake Kathryn that we would be responsible. Now the State has inquired
about Lake Fairy, which connects under 17-92 and there is not a fish
screen to stop them from migrating upstream. They will not issue a
permit until we address this. There is a shallow weir in place, up to Lake
Fairy. Our State Biologist Kris Campbell has walked the area, has reported
to FWC in Tallahassee and, is waiting for them to let her know if the weir is
sufficient. There is also a fish screen at Lake Griffin that connects through
stormwater pipes, to Lake Kathryn. The barrier has caused some
problems in the past. If FWC authorizes to remove the barriers, we can
rely solely on a screen at the Lake Kathryn weir. If they do not, we will
have to work with the City of Longwood or Seminole County to get a
barrier installed between Lake Kathryn and Lake Fairy. Casselberry does
not have any property within our jurisdiction to remedy the problem. This
may delay restocking carp in Lake Kathryn. We are researching fish
screens that can be removed specifically in advance of a major storm.
A new exotic organism was discovered on North Lake Triplet, a giant apple
snail, which is as large as a baseball. (Marissa showed a picture) We do not
have them in any other areas of the City. She has discussed this with a
Rollins student that is seeking a research on the local lakes, requesting
that she maps the location of where they were found and look at
techniques for their eradication. We may be able to use methylated seed
oil to impact the egg. Anyone seeing any bright pink eggs on a dock, the
seawall, plants, etc. please contact her as soon as possible. Ms. Williams
would like to send an educational letter to the residents regarding the
giant apple snail. She will bring in a shell at our next meeting. She advised
Board members not to touch the snails, they do carry a parasite.
Educational Outreach: Dewdrop Pond Shoreline Restoration — Rollins
College students volunteered and completed the installation of hundreds
of native aquatic plants. Mr. Lasure stated that he will get some
3
