future analysis and flood control. They seemed very supportive of everything that was
presented. Board Member Marc Taylor was present and stated he was pleasantly
surprised as he listened to the presentation given. Everything that the Board discussed
was included. He commended Ms. Williams for doing a very good job with her research
and information. The Staff is assuming that the master plan is going to move forward as
was recommended. Ms. Williams is actively getting information on the additional lakes.
She has been on Lake Kathryn to observe its status and other lakes, since the City will
assumedly have fifteen additional lakes to be managed beginning October 1st. She is in
the process of securing authorized access to all of the new water bodies. Our
contractors have been notified that we have extra lakes. Chairman Gonzalez apologized
for not being able to attend the workshop.
5. New Business
A. Aquatic Plant Management Update: Ms. Williams was working with
Applied Aquatics yesterday to survey most of the water bodies to get a
handle on where we are at with planning our treatments. Overall the
water bodies are looking excellent. Hydrilla levels are fairly low. She
explained how hydrilla tubers become dormant during periods of drought
when sediment is exposed, similar to conditions on Middle Triplet/South
and Secret Lake. She showed pictures of hydrilla tubers, which hold onto
the plants energy for later growth and explained how they affect lake
vegetation. Secret Lake needs to be treated and the City needs to do
some spot treatment on Lake Concord. The City is again hosting the
annual Run -Yak Event, and Ms. Williams explained that they needed to
spray the lilies on Middle Triplet to have sufficient access during their
paddle race.
B. Educational Outreach: Summer Camp presentations were completed at
Camp Casselberry, Mead Gardens and any other camps that invited me.
Ms. Williams will be coordinating with teachers for any class room
presentations. She has presented for classes at the University of Central
Florida, specifically Stem Program classes, for the last two years. She gave
presentations on various job opportunities and local careers. This
Program focuses on math and engineering but not as much on the
wetlands and environmental ecology. She currently has no date scheduled
yet, but it will be in the fall. The FWC Program, mentioned before, where
we manage five conservation areas, has been giving us grant funds. We
have sites 2 & 3 that will be included in a rotation. The state will no longer
treat all of them because of how many years they have treated them
prior. This coming year they will treat Carriage Hill and Lake Kathryn
Circle. Three areas that were treated are getting re -growth of air
Circle. Three areas that were treated are getting re -growth of air
potatoes. They have reviewed the site to do a pre -quote meeting to get a
bid. We should know by next week the contractor that will be working
2
