CASSELBERRY CITY COMMISSION
Minutes of December 11, 2017 — Regular Meeting
Page 14 of 15
provided to ensure the proper permits were in place and the proper ammunition was being used.
In the case of any other type of gunshots reported, a regular investigation would be put into
action. In response to questions from the City Commission, Captain Brandenberger advised
she had inquired to the State whether the City of Casselberry had gone through the application
process to be recognized as a bird sanctuary which would prohibit hunting on its lakes and was
advised it had not. She had shared with the City Attorney that there was an application process;
however, it was very rigorous and hard to get approval and although some cities had designated
themselves as bird sanctuaries such as the City of Casselberry had done, that designation was
overridden by state hunting laws. She advised that the City of Casselberry does not have this
status according to the State; therefore, the City's Police Department cannot enforce the bird
sanctuary ordinance. The City Commission agreed by consensus to have City Attorney
Reischmann pursue the application process to be recognized as a bird sanctuary by the
State, and to also look into whether the Florida League of Cities could possibly work
toward legislation on this issue to prohibit hunting in densely populated areas, and to
research what other cities have done about this issue.
Commissioner Anthony Aramendia - Seat No. 1:
Commended all volunteers and staff involved in making the Santa Run a great success, adding
that he believed there were more people out to view it than in previous years. He noted that it
also gives those staff members riding along a chance to see the City and identify areas in which
improvements might need to be made.
Thanked everyone for their help on all the great events which were enjoyed by so many at this
time of year.
Wished everyone Happy Holidays, however they may celebrate them.
Mayor Glancy — Seat No. 5:
• Commended staff and everyone at all levels for the great job done on all the events during the
busy holiday season.
• Extended a special thanks to the Parks and Recreation Division for the beautiful decorations at
City Hall and in Lake Concord Park.
• Wished everyone Happy Hanukkah, Merry Christmas and a safe and Happy New Year.
18. ADJOURNMENT
There being no further business, Mayor Glancy adjourned the meeting at 6:14 p.m.
