City of Casselberry
Parks & Recreation Advisory Board
Regular Meeting— Marcb 14, 2017
"Wine on Nine" is scheduled for Saturday, May 6th at the Casselberry Golf Club.
This is the second fundraiser of the year for the Arts program.
Chair Van Meter inquired about the EarthFest workshops and venue planned.
The EarthFest schedule will include an Arbor Day proclamation by the Mayor,
tree planting workshops, aqua planting workshops and gardening workshops.
Marissa Williams has a full day lineup of guest speakers and give-away programs.
There will also be a "Recycled Art Exhibit", the ECOuture Fashion show with
recycled products, and the Drop Savers contest to recognize the Drop Savers
program winners. This year's T-shirt art was created by Tom Sadler. Bicyclists
are encouraged to bike to the event and a secured area will be designated for
bike parking. All riders will receive a coupon for a free Icee.
® Playground installation for the new Lake Concord Park extension is progressing.
Should be installed sometime in April.
6, Board Member Reports
• Member Holmes reached out to Casselberry Elementary in regards to EarthFest.
• Member Nordstrom — no report.
• Member Icenhower— Provided Silent Auction update for the Garden Party.
• Chairman Van Meter—Visited Secret Lake Park and was concerned about some
of the deteriorating park areas. She mentioned there was some rust and jagged
areas on the older pieces of playground equipment. She also mentioned that the
boardwalk is covered with wild animal feces and has several popped nails. She
is concerned about whether in the future, older parks can be maintained
especially if new parks are being installed. Member Nordstrom suggested that
this could be presented to the Commission as a recommendation to maintain
existing parks before building new ones and maybe the Friends of the Park could
help by volunteering for various park upgrading. Linda Moore reported that the
Parks Master Plan will address these issues. The consultants have visited and
assessed all park areas and playground equipment and will be making
recommendations to address all of the outstanding issues.
• Chairman Van Meter also suggested that perhaps lighting can be installed on the
boardwalk area at Secret Lake Park and said that the grill by the baseball field
area needs to be replaced.
• Motion: Member Holmes made the motion to recommend to the
Commissioners to hold off on developing new parks until the older parks are
maintained and upgraded properly. Member Nordstrom seconded and the
Board passed unanimously 4-0.
