University of Florida IFAS Extension <br />2. Underground. Roots planted near underground utility or power lines may be <br />damaged in the event that repairs are required. Utmost care shall be taken <br />when planting new trees and when carrying out any excavation work near <br />trees as specified in Article XIV - Tree Protection. <br />Section 3 -13.6. Credit for existing trees. <br />Credit shall be granted for trees which are preserved on a site and which meet the tree <br />requirements of Section 3 -13.4. All existing trees must be above six (6) inches caliper, be <br />certified by a tree expert to be in a healthy condition and be of an appropriate species in <br />accordance with the definition included within this Ordinance. Where a tree is of value to <br />the site, staff shall grant an inch for inch credit for the preserved tree based on the <br />retained tree's caliper. City staff will determine whether a tree should be preserved on the <br />basis of such factors as extraordinary size of tree, vigorous health, large canopy cover, <br />historic value, rareness, and age. No credit will be granted for preserved trees which are <br />classified as undesirable, are extremely poor specimens or which are in declining health. <br />Tree credits may only be applied to the required tree plantings of Section 3- 13.7.C.5., <br />Other Landscape Requirements for Non - Vehicular Use Areas, or as a tree bank, <br />alternative in Section 3- 14.8.F.3. <br />Section 3 -13.7. Development landscape and buffer requirements. <br />Landscape and buffering requirements for new development shall be as provided below. <br />No certificate of occupancy shall be issued unless the underlying parcel has at least the <br />required minimum number of trees and landscaping as required by this Section or has <br />written approval from the City. Existing plant material on a site may be counted towards <br />the requirements of Section 3 -13.7 where the applicant can demonstrate that existing <br />plant material is of a sufficient quality and does not include invasive material. <br />Determination of quality shall be made by the City Manager or his /her designee. <br />A. Single family & duplex homes. All newly constructed single - family detached homes <br />and duplex homes shall provide the following number of trees per lot: <br />Size of lot <br />Mature height of 10 feet less than wire <br />18 -40 feet <br />height, or mature canopy spread of less than <br />Greater than 8,000 SF <br />twice the distance to the wire. <br />0 -18 feet <br />Mature height of 10 feet less than wire <br />height. <br />University of Florida IFAS Extension <br />2.
