Planning & Zoning Commission/
Local Planning Agency
February 8, 2012
Page 5
Renee said the third shed is a temporary structure that is used to store yard equipment. She said they didn't think
that a temporary structure required a building permit and they would gladly remove that shed from the property.
Ms. Renee stated that the larger shed is not used as a commercial structure; however, there is information
on their website that sounds like it is being used as a commercial structure. Ms. Renee said the information on the
website is "fluff' to make the business sound like more than it is. She said the shed is a private studio that she uses
on occasion. Ms. Renee felt that the City originally gave the 5 year variance based on the significant economic
hardship due to the structure costing over $30,000 to erect.
Ms. Renee said she is disabled and the structure was originally used for storage. She said the business
was originally started to promote her art work but she changed her interest to glass. Ms. Renee said they found
selling books about glass was a good business. She said she has only sold three pieces of jewelry in the past five
years. Ms. Renee said she has never had an art commission. She said she never taught any students in the shed;
however, students have visited her there. Ms. Renee said she removed all the class information from the website.
She said the additional information was put on the website to make the business more competitive with other
businesses that sell glass books and products. Ms. Renee said their business has a home office and all the products
are stored at a storage facility. Ms. Renee said they would gladly sign any legal documents stating that no business
activities take place in the large shed. She said that the website was padded with information. She said they are not
in violation of operating their home occupation. Ms. Renee said they have a home office for their business. She said
the shed is used for her own personal satisfaction and no noise is generated from the shed.
In response to the Commission's question, Ms. Renee said she has only sold three pieces of jewelry in the
last five years and her business consists primarily of selling books. The Commission questioned Ms. Renee
regarding the construction of a third shed without a permit after dealing with the City to rectify the second shed being
constructed without a permit. Ms. Renee said they thought the third shed was considered a temporary structure and
it did not require a permit. Ms. Renee reviewed the photos of the three existing sheds on her property.
