Report on Community Conversation Meeting Re ag rding the Future of the
Casselberry Golf Club
City Manager Randy Newlon gave a brief statement outlining the events leading up to the September 20, 2012
community meeting relatiogtothe future ofthe Casselberry Golf Club. He explained that in June of 2012 the
owners of the golf course had addressed the Commission, advising that the golf copse business had not been
profitable and asking whether the City would be willing to work with them to determine if redevelopment of
the property was possible. He stated that the owners had proposed to hire planners to illustrate what
redevelopment possibilities might be, featuring single family homes, green space and an inter- connectingtraiI
system. Mr. Newton explained that a brochure had been mailed to City residents inviting them to the
community meeting at which they would be given information about options for the golf course and asked for
their input He advised that there was a strong turnout of approximately 250 people at the meeting, and that the
public clearly opposed any redevelopment of the golf course and asked instead that the City do whatever it
could to preserve it.
Mr. Newton suggested that since the golf course owners had not yet defeated the legal restrictions on the
property, planning for residential redevelopment was premature and should be stopped until such time the
owners had won clear title and standing to propose alternate uses. He further suggested that in the meantime
the City should explore other possibilities such as either the City obtaining and running the golf course,
converting the property to park land, or some combination of both. He then asked the Commissioners for their
questions, comments and direction.
