CASSELBLRRY CITY COMMISSION
Minutes of April 23, 2012 — workshop
Each Commissioner gave a brief synopsis of the characteristics he or she would like to see in a City Manager
as follows:
Commissioner Aramendia stated that he would like to see someone who has a positive attitude and is self -
motivated, is willing to work to get the job done and would not use the position with the City as a just a
stepping stone to something else. He added that the applicant does not need to have been a City Manager, but
should have CEO experience of some sort which documents his or her ability to run an organization.
Commissioner Solomon stated that she felt all of the listed characteristics were equally important, and she
believed that the person selected for the job, having gotten to this point in his or her career, would have all of
those qualities.
Commissioner Miller stated that he would particularly favor someone from the private sector. He stated that he
would be looking at leadership, someone with economic development experience, particularly as it pertains to
business recruitment and business acumen. He added that the City Manager should be personable, as he or she
would be dealing with many different people. He stated that it should be someone with experience in strategic
planning, a familiarity with utilities and a willingness to dive in and work hard to improve the City.
Vice Mayor Hufford stated she would like the applicant to see the challenges of our community as
opportunities, and express a desire to make the City a better place. She added that she would like for it to be
someone who could use their experiences to bring the employees to another level, who would bring new ideas
and a sense of enthusiasm toward the community, and who would make fiscally sound decisions and improve
efficiencies.
Mayor Glancy stated she felt the word "motivator" summed up what she would like to see in a City Manager, a
person who is a team builder and a personable, positive thinker who would see the big picture. She expressed a
desire for the City Manager to be someone with great communication skills who could inspire and attract not
only employees and directors, but also people to work and live here and to bring their businesses here. She
added that he or she should be a person who is confident, but not arrogant. She stated that she also preferred
someone who was from the private sector, but who had flexibility and familiarity with the public sector, and
who would make positive changes for the community.
Mr. Brooks thanked the Commission for their input.
Mayor Glancy expressed thanks to Mr. Brooks on behalf of the Commission for his preparation of the list of
criteria Commission discussion.
Mayor Glancy adjourned the workshop at 7:04 p.m.
