<br />EXTERNAL TRENDS AND ISSUES <br />The Commission and staff discussed trends and issues that are occurring in the <br />international, national. state, and regional environment that may have an impact on the <br />City of Casselberry in the near future. Thefollowing external forces were identified as <br />significant for the community: <br /> <br />Shifting of jobs outside of U.S. <br />Tax Reform <br />Change in Congress <br />size of Government- growing <br />unfunded mandates - state and federal <br />increase in federal taxes <br />Economy downturn <br />Workforce changes <br />Technology changes- communication <br />Price of gas <br />Changing family structure - single parent families <br />Greening of America - alternative energy <br />War in Iraq <br />terrorism threats rising <br />civil liberties diminished <br />delivery of services <br />Baby boomers retiring - living longer <br />Older people remaining in workforce <br />Healthcare Management <br />affordability <br />accessibility <br />availability <br />Growth of Sanford Airport <br />Growth of Orlando <br />tourism <br />Changing development patterns <br />density/vertical development <br />Water supply <br />Growth management <br />service related <br />technology <br />New medical school <br />U.S. competing to keep its share of the economic pie <br />Burdening middle class <br />City/County conflicts - services, land use <br />Increase in natural disasters <br />Commuter rail - alternative transit <br />Internet crimes - identity theft, privacy issues <br />Violent crime rising <br />Competition from other cities, downtowns, city centers <br />
