<br />RESOLUTION 05-1633 <br /> <br />"A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF CASSELBERRY, FLORIDA, ENDORSING <br />THE UNIVERSITY OF CENTRAL FLORIDA'S PROPOSAL FOR A MEDICAL <br />SCHOOL; PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE." <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the supply of physicians necessary to serve the healthcare needs of Floridians cannot <br />keep pace with demand, due to such contributing factors as our population growth, an aging citizenry, and <br />other demographic changes; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the demand for physicians in Florida will continue to outpace our efforts to train and <br />attract doctors in sufficient numbers, as reflected in the numbers that forty-two percent of our physicians are <br />55 or older, that Florida already imports up to ninety percent of the new physicians it needs each year, and <br />that by 2020, over 3,000 new doctors will be needed each year in Florida; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, while Central Florida is the largest metropolitan area in the nation without a Medical <br />School, our region enjoys the assets and opportunities of the strongest economy in the state, the nation's <br />third-best market for job growth, the presence of two of the largest medical systems in the United States, and <br />a projected economic impact for a potential medical school in this region of nearly $3 billion annually; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the University of Central Florida is poised as a leader in the fields of science, medicine, <br />and technology, with such academic and research strengths as found I the Burnette College of Biomedical <br />Sciences with a focus on medical education by biotechnology and nanoscience faculty, the College of Health <br />and Public Affairs, the College of Optics and Photonics, the Institute for Simulation and Training, and the <br />Florida Photonics Center of Excellence; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the University of Central Florida's academic resources and success are further reflected <br />in the university's accomplishments as the fourth-largest producer of medical school preparatory degrees <br />in the state, the second-largest producer of bachelor's degrees in the state, the second-highest number of <br />National Merit Scholars in Florida, and the ninth-largest university in the nation. <br /> <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE <br />CITY OF CASSELBERRY, FLORIDA, AS FOLLOWS: <br /> <br />SECTION I. That the Mayor and City Commission hereby endorses and makes known its support <br />for the University of Central Florida's proposal for a Medical School, and recognizes its promise for our <br />community's health, education, and economic development needs. <br /> <br />SECTION II.
