History and Identity
The southern neighborhood and a portion of the neighborhood
center area were developed by the Casselberry Gardens
Corporation from 1959 to 1968 as a series of additions to a
project called Lake Kathryn Park. This includes the portion of
the study area from Seminola Blvd. to Gee Creek Ln. and west
to Wolf Trail (Figure 4).
The northern part of the study area, from S.R. 434 to Lazy
Circle, was platted next by the Seminole Sites corporation
under the name "The Colonnades" (Figure 5). This was
followed by the development of the remainder of the central
area as "Seminole Sites" starting in 1974 (Figure 6), also by the
Seminole Sites corporation. The plat for the Colonnades
(Figure 5) shows what is today the Helen Street Mobile Home
Community as "Johnson's Poultry Farm", reflecting the
changing character of the area since 1970.
There is little evidence that the developers attempted to use
naming to give these neighborhoods a strong sense of
identity. Except for the Colonnades, the names used for
platting were generic and there is no evidence of
monumentation or other identity markers. The Seminole
Sites plat is named for the development corporation and was
not likely used as a branding tool. The southern portion was
platted and named as an addition to Lake Kathryn Park
despite the distance from and lack of connectivity to Lake
Kathryn and the original Lake Kathryn Park development to
the west.
Today, the Colonnades is marked as Lake Hodge Estates,
indicated by a small sign (Figure 7) located at the northern
entrance at the intersection of Timberlane Trail and S.R.
434. The only other visible residential branding in the
community is associated with the mobile home parks in the
context area: Helen Street Mobile Home Community and
Sherwood Forest.
This creates a lack of name recognition that persists to the
present; residents identify the area with conflicting names
and many residents identify their neighborhood only by the
street they live on. While many successful urban
neighborhoods do not have formal names or boundaries;
naming can help contribute to a sense of community
cohesion and common ownership.
LOCATION MAP _^ ,
11 '`
V,
11
I
LAKE
KATRRY
N f
/, /J .
