6. New Business
Ms. Williams began by informing the Board that we have hired two lake
management technicians since our last meeting. Mr. Damien Rockwood
and Mr. Herson Rodriguez. We are getting them acclimated to the City.
We have the approval for our airboat and it is being manufactured. They
have given a delivery date of May. We will then go to Ocala to pick it up,
and get training. Our current techs have experience with air boats, but we
will get a formal training on the new air boat. They have been busy
evaluating some of our conservation areas and doing some basic shoreline
treatments. Applied Aquatics is still actively managing the lakes. Secret
Lake received a treatment. We did a perimeter combination
diquat/endothall treatment, trying to rotate through herbicides with
different modes of action so that we can ensure that the plants are not
developing a population that is resistance to the herbicides that we are
using. This one seems to be doing very well. We will be doing a follow-up
survey this month to see if we need to do a spot treatment in the canal
downstream. We completed a treatment on Middle Triplet. We had
completed the western side, now the eastern side is completed. This
should help to get rid of the hydrilla on the Chain in that area. SePro is the
chemical company that manufactures fluridone sonar, they have test
available that plant samples can be sent to be evaluated. They determine
if they are resistant to fluridone. This helps to determine what level of
herbicide to apply. We pulled some samples in January from Secret Lake,
Grassy Lake, Middle Triplet, Yvonne, Quintuplet Chain and Lake Kathryn to
get a comprehensive handle on where our resistance is. We are expecting
the results in the near future. Future planning on the treatment on Lake
Kathryn and Grassy Lake. They both have an extensive amount of hydrilla,
especially Grassy Lake. It will need a full lake treatment. We do have
enough herbicide in stock for this. Lake Kathryn has about 34 acres of
hydrilla, which is about half of the waterbody, along with the lagoon
downstream. Based on the cost, we will likely be using Aquathol, which is
more affordable and does not have an irrigation restriction. Aquathol is
the name brand, the active ingredient is endothall. This is also the active
ingredient in the Hydrothol product. Plans have been made with making
sure we have enough chemicals and we should begin treatment next
week. We will be treating the full Lake Kathryn and the lagoon
downstream. We need to get the hydrilla down to a manageable level.
Lake Kathryn's treatment alone will be approximately $20,000 just for this
one treatment. We have been approved for the funds that we will need to
manage the lakes this winter.
We are seeking the transfer of Lake Kathryn's triploid grass carp permit to
the City. The FWC (Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission)
previously issued a permit to stock Fairy Lake, which drains into Lake
Kathryn, and it was stocked in 2006. They would like us to have a fish
screen to stop the fish from going upstream. They will allow the City of
2
