year has a program assessment, which we did not have to submit previously. Geosyntec
will be providing a summary that we will be able to submit to the State.
A few years ago, the City conducted an alum treatment project on the Triplet Chain, a
liquid form of aluminum that binds to the suspended solids in the water column and
also dissolved nutrients and causes them to settle at the bottom of the lake. They are
rendered inactive and no longer available to fuel algae growth. It helps to reduce the
nutrient concentration immediately and we will be doing a study on Lake Concord to see
if we are getting re -suspended legacy nutrient pollution that could also use an alum
treatment. We are working on an alum treatment system for Queens Mirror as well.
There is a drainage ditch that goes from the golf course and it is taking a significantly
amount of flow through wetlands in that vicinity to the lake. We will be able to put an
alum treatment station in-line with this ditch and dose the flow with alum to reduce
nutrient pollution.
The City will be posting vacancies in September for two new lake technicians. This will
assist in improving response time and levels of service as opposed to waiting for
someone to become available like we currently do with our contractor. We are hoping
that we will have them on board by the end of the year. We are expecting to get some
new equipment, an air boat, and a vehicle for the new staff.
Educational Outreach: Ms. Williams explained that she took part in a variety of
summer camp presentations including the City of Casselberry, Lake Howell High, Rollins
College, UCF etc. She continues to grow our connections with Rollins College; their
students work really hard at volunteering.
Ms. Williams showed an image of the newly wrapped VAC Truck, that was approved by
our Lakes Management Advisory Board with the message, "Only Rain, Down The Drain".
Upcoming Events: None. This fall Ms. Williams would like to do a clean-up in the Lake
Kathryn conservation area. It is a wetland off of Lake Kathryn Circle, where garbage is
frequently dumped. If you know of any interest in neighborhood presentations, Ms.
Williams requested that you inform her so she can get in touch with the interested
group. She encouraged Community Education Event presentations to give the residents
a better understanding about our program and how we will be moving forward.
A. Discussions: Mr. Tizzio was interested in the process and is very happy to be
on this Board. He shared that he is running for Seminole County Soil and
Water Board and offered his assistance if there is any information that he can
share with the Board.
6. Audience Participation: Mr. John Casselberry inquired about herbicide application
techniques and regulatory policies. Ms. Williams explained some of the herbicides
commonly used for aquatic plant control and their method of application along with the
species the City is permitted to treat.
3
