A. herbicide treatments. Grassy Lake is finishing an on-going fluridone
treatment; plants are decomposing. The longest prior duration of control
that we have been able to gain from this type of herbicide is about two
years. Lost Lake and other water bodies that had perimeter aquathol
applications are doing excellent. The revegetated areas that Rollins
College volunteers had been assisting us with on North Triplet are thriving
with the water level increase. The City has five conservation areas that
have been managed under a grant from the Florida Fish and Wild Life
Conservation Commission: Lake Kathryn Circle, Secret Lake, Marigold,
Carriage Hill, and North Winer Park Drive. These areas were treated
annually for about four years. They will no longer allow annual funding for
more than a five year time frame. To accommodate FWC's grant protocol,
the conservation areas have now been moved into a biannual rotation.
Lake Katherine Circle, the area that we are planning a clean-up for in
October, is scheduled to have a treatment next spring. Other areas
considered in this treatment were shown by Ms. Williams on the projector
screen.
Educational Outreach: Ms. Williams conducted a Kayak tour this past
weekend with one of the residents that won a free eco -paddle as part of
an Earth Fest raffle package. She explained that the resident had never
paddled through any of the City's lakes, and it was an excellent
opportunity to encourage her to educate her neighbors and promote
community workshops or volunteer activities. Ms. Williams explained that
she had been providing educational presentations for our Casselberry
Summer Camp students utilizing the Stormwater Model, the Enviro-Scape.
This hands-on model allows the children to interact and get a better
understanding of Stormwater pollution, where it goes, and how
everything is connected. We have also had representatives from the
Cambrian Foundation and IFAS Extension Office to discuss topics such as
surface water quality and protection of bee populations. Mead Gardens
and the City of Winter Park Staff also partner with the City of Casselberry
and conduct educational presentations at each other's Summer Camp
programs. We have been partnering with them for a few years.
The Lakes Management Guide Update draft will be distributed in a few
weeks for your review and to be discussed in our next meeting.
B. Upcoming Events: There will be grass carp installed in the retention
ponds located across the street at Integra Lakes. This will help control
aquatic plants. Grass carp helps to eat the submersed aquatic growth in
retention ponds. The following fish will also be adding to existing stocked
water bodies: Secret Lake — 10, Lake Griffin — 25, Lake Concord -15. The
State determines how many are allowed.
2
